I have rounded up the top 5 MUST HAVE jackets for this winter and I hope I will be getting you excited for layering season! I took a lot of time to find you my favourites in South African stores and you will find them linked in the captions of the photos (you’ll see – the catalogue-type photos, not the inspo-type photos).
They range from a bargain (Mr Price, yes), to pricy and everything in between! So, have a look.
#1: “HERITAGE FABRICS”
Tweed, plaid and houndstooth. Menswear inspired.
This winter, I will be permanently throwing it back to my School Principal-Grandfather’s coat. I have to say, I wasn’t sure about this when I first saw it as this “heritage fabrics” always give me the impression that it is scratchy. But, obviously this cannot be true for every jacket out there.
Let me just get you on board with this:
I am so surprised with this style and that it has really grown on me! I find it so old-school cool. I am now hunting for a real, old tweed jacket.
If you are not in the mood or don’t have the patience (I know I actually don’t) to go through typical second hand crap to find an original professor jacket – they are EVERYWHERE this season. So just walk into any old store and you’ll find it! Or check it our through the links captioned on the below photos:
and next we have
#2: TEDDY BEAR COAT
This is probably the jacket that has the most appropriate and accurately described name. I am totally down with wearing this snug jacket all winter and am convinced that this is finally something that will keep me warm! I also find it super cute.
I suggest wearing it with chunky ankle boots, dad sneaks or good ol’ Dr Martins. I’m also very pro “the bigger, the better” in this aspect. Even to the point of ridiculousness. I think we have space for being a little ridiculous this winter. Why not?
The Teddy coat has already hit the shelves here in South Africa. See some of my favourites below:
#3: PUFFER JACKETS. ESPECIALLY A BULKY AND CROPPED PUFF
In 2015, when puffer jackets first made its appearance in outdoor shops like Cape Union Mart, I was one of those people who refused to buy one and insisted that it is the biggest fad ever and will NEVER stay in fashion. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury. I was wrong.
I had to shamelessly go back on my word and bought my first puffer the next year. And here we are, 4 years later and the puffer-trend is stronger and cooler than ever. And I want every single one that I see. They’re just too cool and warm and comfy.
I have linked all these jackets below: But, really. The selection of puffers that we have in store at the moment is insane. If I would have linked every one that I saw, this article would have been double this length. I love the whole retro look, though. The last one from Zara is top of my wish list!
#4: CINCHED SUITING – basically big blazers with a belt.
Been loving this style! Feminine X Masculine at its best. My style inspo with this specifically is Xenia Adonts:
Years ago my (super stylish) aunt bought me this book “Parisian Chic” where Sophie Gachet goes through the staples of a Parisian woman’s closet. Basically it’s a book on those items and outfits that will never go out of style. Tying a belt aount an oversized blazer was one of these looks that she wrote about. From there I have always loved it, but never saw other people wear it, never seen it on Pinterest, on blogs, nothing…until this year.
The whole blazer-and-belt look is also much edgier than what I initially saw in my muse-book, which was more of just a navy jacket with a black belt. This season we have girls mixing tweed with neon, using fanny packs as belts, wearing orange velvet… everything. There’s just so much freedom with fashion these days and I am absolutely loving it!
But now, for your viewing pleasure my ladies:
#5: YOUR DAD’S OLD FLEECE.
Yes, babe. You read that right. No, it’s not an April Fools joke. Sometimes it baffles me what comes into style. I guess this is the whole laid back, I-forgot-my-own-jacket look. Could be cool. Let’s see what happens with this one.
So, if you are desperate to jump on this trend and you will not be rummaging in your dad’s cupboard. Cotton On has some:
So these are my top 5 Winter jacket trends! This post really got me amped for jacket season and seems like it will be upon us sooner rather than later!
